Attraction Guide

Longmen Grottoes

One of China’s greatest cave-temple complexes, carved into the cliffs of the Yi River just south of Luoyang. Here is what it is, how long to allow, and how to visit it without wasting time or energy.

At a glance

The Longmen Grottoes are a UNESCO World Heritage site with around 2,300 caves and over 100,000 Buddhist statues carved into limestone cliffs along the Yi River. Work began in the late 5th century and peaked under the Tang dynasty. The centerpiece is the Fengxian Temple group, dominated by the 17-metre Vairocana Buddha.

Why visit

It is one of the finest examples of Chinese Buddhist cave art, on a scale that is hard to grasp until you stand beneath it. The carvings span hundreds of years, so you move through changes in style from the Northern Wei to the Tang. For most international visitors it is the single must-see of the Luoyang region.

What to see

  • Fengxian Temple — the huge Vairocana Buddha and its attendants, the iconic view of Longmen.
  • The central caves — Wanfo Cave with its thousands of small Buddhas, and the Binyang caves.
  • West Hill vs East Hill — the main sights and the Vairocana Buddha are on the West Hill; the East Hill has fewer, quieter caves and a view back across the river.
  • Xiangshan Temple — on the East Hill, part of the same ticket area for many visitors.

How long to allow

Most visitors spend 2–4 hours on the main West Hill route. A half-day visit including city or station pickup is comfortable; a full day leaves room to add White Horse Temple or the old town.

Getting there

Longmen sits beside Luoyang Longmen high-speed rail station, about 20–30 minutes from the city centre by road. A private vehicle drops you at the entrance and meets you at the end, which avoids the walk back from the far end of the route.

Tickets and opening hours

Tickets and opening hours change by season and are managed through official channels. We check current times and booking requirements before your visit — do not rely on figures found elsewhere as final.

Pair it with

Combine Longmen with White Horse Temple for a full first day, or with the Luoyang old town and Yingtian Gate in the evening. Our Longmen & White Horse Temple day tour does exactly this.

Common questions

Is there much walking or stairs?

Yes — the West Hill route follows paths with steps in places. Tell us about mobility concerns and we will plan an easier route and arrange the pickup points to minimise walking.

How far is it from the station?

Very close — Luoyang Longmen station is beside the site, so it is a natural first or last stop on a rail-based trip.

Can I visit without a guide?

Yes, entry does not require a guide, but a guide brings the key caves to life and handles the logistics of where to start and end.
