Shaolin Temple — Visit Guide from Luoyang
Shaolin Temple
The home of kung fu, in Dengfeng about an hour from Luoyang. Here is where it is, what the temple, Pagoda Forest and performance actually are, and how to fit it into a day or two-day route from Luoyang.
At a glance
The Shaolin Temple is a Buddhist monastery in Dengfeng, Henan, about an hour’s drive from Luoyang. It is famous as the birthplace of Shaolin kung fu. The surrounding “Historic Monuments of Dengfeng” are a UNESCO World Heritage site; the visit most people make centres on the temple, the Pagoda Forest and a martial arts performance.
Why visit
Shaolin has global recognition from film and culture, but the real experience is seeing the working monastery, the forest of ancient pagoda tombs and the discipline of the students who train there. It pairs the kung fu story with a real Buddhist setting.
What to see
- The temple complex — the gate, halls and courtyards where the monastery’s life is centred.
- Pagoda Forest — the largest of its kind in China, with hundreds of stone and brick pagodas marking the tombs of past abbots.
- Martial arts performance — a demonstration by students, when scheduled; times follow the day’s programme rather than a fixed published schedule.
- Training halls — where students practise, often visible around the complex.
How long to allow
Allow roughly half a day on site, plus the drive each way from Luoyang. A day trip from Luoyang is about 9–10 hours door to door; a two-day route leaves time for the Luoyang sights without rushing.
Getting there
Shaolin is in Dengfeng, not Luoyang. The drive is about an hour each way depending on your pickup point. A private vehicle and driver is the simplest option and lets you see the temple at your own pace.
Tickets and performance times
Tickets, opening hours and performance schedules change by season and day. We confirm current arrangements before your visit — the performance in particular depends on the day’s programme.
Pair it with
Combine Shaolin with the Longmen Grottoes and White Horse Temple on a two-day route: day one in Luoyang, day two at Shaolin. See our Luoyang & Shaolin 2-day tour.
Common questions
Is Shaolin Temple in Luoyang?
No — it is in Dengfeng, about an hour away by road. It is an easy day trip or two-day stop from Luoyang, but it is not inside the city.
Can I always see the kung fu performance?
The performance runs on a schedule set by the site each day. We confirm whether it is available on your date and plan around it when it is.
Is it worth the drive from Luoyang?
For most visitors interested in kung fu or Chinese Buddhism, yes. If your time is very short, the Longmen Grottoes and White Horse Temple are the higher priority inside Luoyang itself.
