Travel Guide

Xi’an to Luoyang

The high-speed rail links the two cities in roughly an hour and a half, so it is an easy add-on to a Xi’an trip. Here are the stations, the route options, and when a private transfer makes more sense than the train.

The short answer

Most travelers take the high-speed train from Xi’an North station to Luoyang Longmen station — a journey of roughly 1.5 hours. From Luoyang Longmen station you are right beside the Longmen Grottoes and a short drive from the city centre. A private transfer is the better choice if you have luggage, a group, or want to sightsee along the way.

Your options compared

Option Rough time Best for
High-speed train ~1.5 hours + station time Solo travelers and pairs traveling light
Private transfer ~4–5 hours by road Groups, lots of luggage, or a stop along the way

Step by step

  1. Book the train for a service to Luoyang Longmen, not the city’s other stations.
  2. Arrive at Xi’an North with time for security — allow extra if it is your first Chinese station.
  3. At Luoyang Longmen, you are beside the Grottoes; a private pickup meets you and can start the tour straight away.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Booking to the wrong station. Aim for Luoyang Longmen — it is the stop beside the Grottoes.
  • Underestimating station time. Security and platform finding add time on top of the journey.
  • Missing the Grottoes because of luggage. A pickup that stores your bags solves this — ask us to meet you at the station.

Who this suits

The train suits independent travelers going point to point. A private transfer suits families and groups who want door-to-door comfort, or anyone who wants to turn the transfer into part of the trip with a stop en route.
