Luoyang Peony Festival 2027: Dates, Gardens & Tips

Every April, Luoyang turns into a sea of peonies — the city’s most famous season and one of the most romantic spring sights in China. Here’s when to come, where to see the blooms, and how to plan around the crowds.

The short answer

The festival runs through April, with the best blooms typically from mid to late April (roughly April 10–25). This is also Luoyang’s busiest and priciest month — book your hotel three to four weeks ahead if you’re coming for the flowers.

When the peonies actually bloom

Peony bloom timing shifts slightly every year with spring temperatures, so treat exact dates as a guide rather than a guarantee. As a rule of thumb:

  • Early varieties — open from early April.
  • Peak bloom — mid to late April; this is when the gardens are at their most spectacular.
  • Late varieties — stretch into early May.

If peonies are the whole point of your trip, target mid to late April — and accept that this is also the single busiest week of Luoyang’s year.

Where to see them

Luoyang has several dedicated peony gardens, each with a slightly different character. The best-known include:

  • Wangcheng Park — the traditional downtown favorite, easy to reach and lively.
  • China National Flower Garden — a large riverside garden on the south bank of the Luo River.
  • Sui-Tang City Ruins Botanical Garden — pairs peonies with Tang-dynasty heritage.
  • National Peony Garden and International Peony Garden — larger collections, often less crowded than the city-center parks.

We’ll slot the right garden into your route based on what’s blooming and where you’re staying — no need to research it yourself.

The one thing most visitors get wrong

Many travelers lock in their dates, then realize two things too late:

  • Hotels sell out. Rooms near the main gardens book up fast in April, and last-minute options mean staying far from the center.
  • Longmen Grottoes get busy too. Tour groups bundle the grottoes with the peony parks, so the UNESCO site sees its own crowd spike. Plan an early-morning visit to beat the buses.

Book early

If your dates fall in April, secure your hotel and timed garden tickets as early as you can — ideally several weeks out. Tell us your dates and we’ll lock in the rooms and tickets for you.

Pairing peonies with the icons

A peony visit slots neatly into a classic Luoyang trip. A comfortable three-day plan:

  • Day 1 — Longmen Grottoes (early morning), then the old town at night.
  • Day 2 — a peony garden in the morning, White Horse Temple in the afternoon.
  • Day 3 — Shaolin Temple and the Kung Fu performance.
